City Overview

İstanbul is a city in Turkey spanning Europe and Asia across the Bosporus Strait. It is known for historic sites such as Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Grand Bazaar. Districts are connected by metro, trams, ferries, and roads.

How the İstanbul list is ranked

Hotels are ordered by the latest opening or renovation year recorded in our hotel data. We keep those dates separate because a newly opened hotel and an older property with a recent renovation are not the same thing.

For instance, The Galata Istanbul Hotel - MGallery renovated in 2022. Opening and renovation records can refer to the whole property rather than every room. Compare the room type, recent guest feedback and current booking details before choosing.

Recommendation

Where to Stay in İstanbul

Sultanahmet

Sultanahmet is Istanbul's most convenient base for the headline historic sights. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern and Topkapı Palace are close enough to visit on foot, and the T1 tram connects the district with Eminönü and Karaköy. Evenings are quieter than in Beyoğlu, which suits early starts but not travellers seeking nightlife.

Beyoğlu (Taksim & Cihangir)

Beyoğlu covers several distinct areas north of the Golden Horn. Taksim is the busy transport and shopping hub, Cihangir has smaller streets and cafés, and Pera combines historic architecture with museums and hotels. This is one of the strongest bases for restaurants and nightlife, although the liveliest streets can remain noisy late into the evening.

Karaköy

Karaköy sits between the waterfront, Galata and the historic peninsula. The neighbourhood combines restaurants, galleries and Galataport with practical ferry and tram connections. It is easy to cross the Galata Bridge toward the Old City or travel uphill toward Beyoğlu, making it the most balanced base for visitors who do not want to choose between historic and modern Istanbul.

Beşiktaş & Ortaköy

Beşiktaş is a lively local centre with ferries, markets and breakfast cafés, while Ortaköy sits farther north beside the Bosphorus. Both work well for waterfront views and access to Dolmabahçe Palace. Ferries are useful, and the M7 reaches Yıldız, but road traffic can make journeys toward Sultanahmet less predictable than from Karaköy.
