Edinburgh Best Neighborhood Guide

Where to stay in Edinburgh: A neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide to the best areas and boutique hotels.

Browse Hotels in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a city defined by its dramatic dual topography: the ancient, winding alleys of the medieval Old Town stretching along the Royal Mile, and the elegant, sweeping Georgian crescents of the New Town. Boutique hotels here often embrace this history, occupying grand historic townhouses, converted vaults, or historic banks. Where you choose to stay will heavily influence whether you experience the city as a moody, cinematic medieval fortress or an enlightened, sophisticated Georgian capital.

01

The Old Town

The Old Town is the medieval heart of Edinburgh, a UNESCO World Heritage site centered on the steeply sloping Royal Mile that connects Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The architecture is ancient, towering, and atmospheric, defined by its narrow closes (alleyways) and hidden vaults. Boutique hotels here lean heavily into this historic, sometimes gothic aesthetic, often featuring exposed stone and heavy tartans. This is the best area for a short city break, as you step out of your hotel right into the middle of the city's most famous landmarks.

What we love

  • +Immediate walking access to Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and museums
  • +Incredibly atmospheric, medieval surroundings
  • +High density of unique, historic boutique hotels

Worth noting

  • Very steep climbs; pushing luggage up the hills or stairs can be brutal
  • The most crowded area, particularly during the August festivals (Fringe)
  • Dining can lean towards tourist-trap pubs

02

The New Town

Just north of Princes Street lies the New Town, a masterpiece of 18th-century Georgian city planning. Characterized by wide, cobbled streets, grandiose squares (like Charlotte Square), and elegant townhouses, it starkly contrasts the cramped Old Town. Boutique accommodations here often occupy these massive townhouses, offering spacious rooms with high ceilings and sophisticated, neoclassical design. It is ideal for travelers who want premium shopping, excellent upscale dining, and a refined atmosphere without the steep hills.

What we love

  • +Elegant, spacious Georgian architecture and large hotel rooms
  • +Excellent high-end shopping (George Street, Multrees Walk)
  • +Flatter streets, making it much easier to pull luggage
  • +Sophisticated, upscale dining and cocktail bars

Worth noting

  • Lacks the medieval 'Hogwarts' feel of the Old Town
  • A slightly longer walk to the Castle and Royal Mile (though still walkable)
  • Hotels can be quite expensive

Stockbridge

Located to the northwest of the New Town, moving downhill towards the Water of Leith, Stockbridge is an affluent, village-like neighborhood. It features beautiful Georgian and Victorian houses, leafy streets, and an incredibly strong independent retail scene with artisan cheesemongers, vintage shops, and excellent cafes. Boutique accommodations are more likely to be upscale guesthouses or chic B&Bs rather than large hotels. It is the perfect choice for return visitors or travelers who prefer a refined, local, residential feel over being directly next to major tourist sites.

What we love

  • +Charming 'village in the city' atmosphere
  • +Fantastic Sunday farmers' market and independent boutiques
  • +Beautiful walks along the Water of Leith and through Dean Village

Worth noting

  • It's a steep walk back up the hill to get to the city center
  • Farther from the main historic attractions
  • Fewer full-service boutique hotels

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh · Dean Village · Stockbridge Market (Sundays) · Inverleith Park

04

Leith

Historically Edinburgh's gritty port district, Leith (situated a couple of miles north of the city center) has undergone significant gentrification to become a culinary hotspot. Specifically, the area known as The Shore is lined with Michelin-starred restaurants and trendy waterfront bistros. Boutique hotels here are often housed in converted warehouses or nautical buildings. Stay here if you prioritize food above all else and don’t mind taking a tram or bus to reach the Castle and the Old Town.

What we love

  • +Outstanding dining scene, including multiple Michelin-starred restaurants
  • +Trendy, waterfront atmosphere distinct from the main city
  • +Generally better value for accommodation

Worth noting

  • A 15-20 minute bus or tram ride from the main tourist attractions
  • Parts of the wider Leith area still feel a bit rough
  • Not ideal for a very short trip focused entirely on ancient history

Nearby

The Royal Yacht Britannia · The Shore (dining district) · Leith Links · Ocean Terminal

05

West End

The West End sits directly adjacent to the New Town, sharing its grandiose Georgian architecture but with a slightly quieter, more residential vibe. It is characterized by cobbled streets, hidden mews alleys, and a range of cultural venues. Boutique hotels here often blend Victorian elegance with modern bohemian touches. It provides an excellent compromise: it's very close to both the New Town shopping and the Old Town sights (via Princes Street), but feels slightly removed from the tourist throngs.

What we love

  • +Beautiful, picturesque streets like William Street and hidden mews
  • +Walking distance to Haymarket Train Station
  • +Quieter and more relaxed than the immediate New Town center

Worth noting

  • Fewer major attractions right on your doorstep
  • Dining scene is good but less concentrated than the New Town or Leith

Nearby

Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art · Water of Leith Walkway (Western section) · Usher Hall · St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral
