For a first visit, stay on the Canal Ring: The Hendrick's, Ambassade and The Toren are all in historic canal houses. For a quieter, village feel, pick the Jordaan (Mr. Jordaan, Linden); for museums, the Museum Quarter (JL No76, Roemer). Every hotel here with a published room count has 60 rooms or fewer. Many canal houses have steep stairs, so we say where the hotel confirms a lift.

56 rooms and suites, a hotel since 1953 and long a favourite with writers. The houses were joined without levelling the floors, so expect small sets of stairs in the halls and some rooms; a few rooms are split over two levels by a spiral staircase.

West of the Prinsengracht: narrow streets, smaller canals, independent shops and brown cafes, and quieter evenings than the centre.

It began in the 1960s with the founder renting out his couch, and grew room by room into the house next door. Rooms are compact (singles from 11 m², twins 15 m²) and look over the canal or the courtyards. There is no parking on the Bloemgracht.

The hotel leans into "tiny living": small doubles and twins are 11 m². The Saturday market on the Lindengracht sets up right outside the door.

Recommendation
Centrum covers Amsterdam's oldest streets, while the Canal Ring wraps around it through the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. This is the easiest base for a first visit because many major sights, canal routes and central transport connections are close. The trade-off is demand: busy streets, compact rooms and late noise are more common than in Jordaan or Oud-Zuid.
Jordaan sits immediately west of the main Canal Ring, with narrow streets, galleries, independent shops and neighbourhood cafés around the Bloemgracht and Noordermarkt. It keeps central Amsterdam within walking distance without feeling as busy as the streets around Dam Square. Hotels are fewer and generally smaller, which is part of the appeal but limits choice.
De Pijp is a lively residential district south of the Canal Ring, centred on Albert Cuyp Market and Sarphatipark. Its restaurants, cafés and bars make it a strong choice for travellers who want the neighbourhood to remain active after sightseeing. Metro and tram links make the centre accessible, but it is not the best base for walking to every historic sight.
Oud-Zuid is the practical base for Amsterdam's major museums and Vondelpark. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Concertgebouw sit around Museumplein, while nearby residential streets are calmer than Centrum. It suits art-focused trips and families, though evening dining and nightlife are less varied than in De Pijp or central Amsterdam.
