Istanbul / Choosing your base
Sultanahmet vs Taksim: Where Should You Stay?
Stay close to the historic sights, or finish the day near the restaurants and bars you want to visit.
The short answer
Our pick is Sultanahmet for a short first visit focused on Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace. Choose Taksim and the surrounding Beyoglu neighbourhoods if evenings out matter more than walking to those sights each morning. You can visit both from either base: choose where you want to start and end the day, then check the hotel's actual address.
Choose Sultanahmet for
Short first visits centred on the major historic sights.
Choose it when most of your must-see places are on the historic peninsula and you want to reach them on foot.
The trade-off: Our less convenient choice for repeated late evenings in Beyoglu. Plan how you will return rather than assuming every outing is walkable.
Choose Taksim for
Travellers who want evening options near their base.
Choose this side of the city when Istiklal Avenue and the surrounding dining and nightlife are a bigger part of your plans.
The trade-off: The main Sultanahmet sights require a separate journey. Street noise, hills and the distance from the square vary between hotels.

Sultanahmet and Taksim, side by side
| What matters | Sultanahmet | Taksim |
|---|---|---|
| Historic sightseeing | The more convenient base for walking to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and Topkapi Palace. | Treat the historic peninsula as an outing rather than expecting those sights outside your hotel. |
| Evenings out | Our choice if you prefer dinner followed by an early start near the monuments. | Our choice if restaurants, bars and time around Istiklal Avenue are a main reason for the trip. |
| Public transport | The T1 tram serves Sultanahmet. Check the walk from the stop to your hotel. | Taksim has the M2 metro and F1 funicular. F1 connects to the T1 tram at Kabatas; Taksim is not itself a T1 stop. |
| Boutique hotel setting | Compare small hotels in the historic streets, such as Ibrahim Pasha and White House Hotel. | Look beyond the square if the property matters more: Tomtom and Cihangir offer alternatives elsewhere in Beyoglu. |
| Light sleepers | Do not assume a historic address guarantees silence. Ask about street-facing rooms and surrounding activity. | Check the particular street, nearby venues and room position rather than treating all of Beyoglu as equally noisy. |
| Luggage and mobility | Ask about the approach to the hotel, steps and lift access; a central location alone does not establish accessibility. | Check slopes between your hotel and transport. Witt, for example, describes its Cihangir location as being on a steep hill. |

Hotels to compare once you have chosen your base
These are different kinds of stay, not a like-for-like price ranking. Compare the room and booking conditions before deciding.
Sultanahmet
Hotel Ibrahim Pasha
A boutique hotel in Sultanahmet to consider when staying in the historic centre is the main point of the trip.
Compare the available room types and ask about access if stairs or room size matter to your stay.
Sultanahmet
White House Hotel Istanbul
An Old City hotel on Catalcesme Street for travellers who want to build their stay around the nearby historic sights.
Its roof garden is a shared hotel space, not a promise of a landmark view from every bedroom. Check the room you book.
Tomtom, Beyoglu - not Taksim Square
Tomtom Suites
An all-suite boutique option on a side street in Beyoglu, worth considering if you want this side of the city without choosing a hotel on the square.
This is a wider-Beyoglu alternative, not a Taksim Square hotel. Check your route to transport and the evening venues you plan to use.
Cihangir, Beyoglu - not Taksim Square
Witt Istanbul Suites
A Cihangir alternative for travellers who prefer a neighbourhood base to staying immediately beside the square.
The hotel explicitly describes its location as a steep hill. Ask about the approach before booking if slopes, luggage or a pushchair are a concern.

Taksim, Beyoglu and Galata are not the same hotel location
Taksim Square is a specific place within the wider Beyoglu district. A hotel described as being in Beyoglu might instead be in Tomtom, Cihangir, Pera or Galata. Those addresses can suit the same sort of trip, but they do not give you the same walk to the square or a metro entrance.
Our shortlist makes that distinction: Ibrahim Pasha and White House are Sultanahmet choices; Tomtom Suites and Witt are wider-Beyoglu alternatives, not hotels on Taksim Square. If being by the square is essential, check the map and entrance before deciding. The photograph above shows the Galata waterfront, not Taksim Square.
For a first visit, start with your sightseeing plans
If your short list is Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and Topkapi Palace, we would stay in Sultanahmet. You can return to the hotel between outings without making a cross-city journey each time. Staying nearby does not remove admission rules or queues: check the official visitor information for each attraction.
Choose Taksim or another Beyoglu neighbourhood if you are happy to travel to the historic peninsula and would rather finish near your evening plans. That can be the better trade-off when you want several dinners out, bars or time around Istiklal Avenue, rather than an early night beside the monuments.
How do you get between Taksim and Sultanahmet?
One rail connection is the F1 funicular from Taksim to Kabatas, followed by the T1 tram to Sultanahmet. Reverse the route to return. The nostalgic tram along Istiklal Avenue is the T2, not the T1 service to Sultanahmet.
That is a connection between transport stops, not a door-to-door promise for every hotel. Allow for walking, the interchange and current service conditions. Check Metro Istanbul's announcements before travelling, particularly for a late return; do not assume that every line runs all night or that a taxi journey has a fixed duration.
Which works better for families or travellers avoiding steep walks?
We would favour a hotel near the sights your group will use most, then check the approach to that particular property. Walking to several Sultanahmet attractions can reduce the number of transport changes, but it does not establish that the streets, entrance or room are step-free.
Around Beyoglu, pay particular attention to the slope between the room, the waterfront and transport. Witt's own location page flags its steep hill. Ask hotels about lifts, entrance steps and vehicle access, and confirm room occupancy rather than assuming every suite accommodates a family.
Should you split your stay or choose another area?
For a short visit, we would usually choose one hotel and visit the other area. Moving adds packing and another check-in without being necessary to see both. A split is more useful if you want two particular hotels or a longer stay with genuinely different plans.
If neither option feels right, compare Karakoy in our full Istanbul neighbourhood guide. It is worth considering when you want a waterfront base between the historic peninsula and the streets uphill toward Beyoglu. Kadikoy, Besiktas and other districts suit different trips; this comparison is not a ranking of the whole city.
Common questions
Is Sultanahmet or Taksim better for a first visit?
Our default is Sultanahmet for a short stay built around Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace. Choose Taksim or wider Beyoglu if evenings out matter more and you are happy to travel to those sights.
Is Taksim the same as Beyoglu?
No. Taksim Square is within the wider Beyoglu district. Hotels in Tomtom, Cihangir, Pera or Galata should not be assumed to be beside the square. Check the hotel's actual address and transport route.
Is there a direct tram from Taksim to Sultanahmet?
Taksim is not on the T1 tram line. One connection is F1 from Taksim to Kabatas, then T1 to Sultanahmet. The T2 heritage tram on Istiklal Avenue is a different service. Check current operating information before travelling.
Is Sultanahmet always quieter than Taksim?
We would choose Sultanahmet for a sightseeing-led stay rather than nightlife, but neither area name guarantees a quiet room. Check the street, neighbouring venues, room position and recent guest comments.
Are the Beyoglu hotels in this guide on Taksim Square?
No. Tomtom Suites is in Tomtom and Witt Istanbul Suites is in Cihangir. They are alternatives elsewhere in Beyoglu, not square-side hotels. Their locations are labelled separately in the shortlist.
Should you stay in both areas on a short trip?
Usually we would choose one base and visit the other. Change hotels if you want two distinct hotel experiences, rather than assuming you need separate accommodation to explore both areas.
