Recommendation
Midtown is the most efficient New York base for a first visit. Times Square, Broadway, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park and the Empire State Building are close, while major subway hubs make trips uptown and downtown straightforward. The trade-off is intensity: street noise, crowds and a businesslike atmosphere vary block by block.
SoHo combines cast-iron architecture with flagship shops and busy pedestrian streets, while Tribeca is calmer, more residential and restaurant-led. Both provide easy access to Lower Manhattan and several subway lines. This is a polished downtown base, but room prices are among the highest in the city and SoHo becomes crowded on shopping days.
Greenwich Village and the West Village replace Manhattan's regular grid with smaller streets, brownstones, restaurants and live-music venues. Washington Square Park and the West 4th Street subway hub keep the area connected, but hotels are relatively scarce. This is a strong choice when the neighbourhood itself matters more than being beside major attractions.
Chelsea stretches from busy Sixth Avenue to the Hudson waterfront, so hotel location matters. The High Line, Chelsea Market and gallery district make the western side attractive for art and food, while nearby subway stations keep Midtown and downtown accessible. The neighbourhood balances sightseeing with evening dining better than Midtown, though cross-town travel can be slow.
