Ao Nang vs Railay: Where Should You Stay in Krabi?

A convenient mainland base or a beach-and-cliff retreat? The boat journey is the difference to plan around.

The short answer

Our pick is Ao Nang if you want flexible outings, plenty of meals out and a road transfer to the airport. Choose Railay if you want to stay among the beaches and limestone cliffs and are happy to arrive and leave by boat. Railay is not an island, but it has no road connection to Ao Nang: that matters more than how close the two look on a map.

Choose Ao Nang for

First visits, mainland excursions and straightforward airport transfers.

The more practical base if you want to explore beyond the beach and change plans without arranging a boat each time.

The trade-off: A busy resort town. Some hotels are inland, and an Ao Nang address does not mean you can step straight onto the sand.

Choose Railay for

Beach-focused stays, climbing trips and couples who want time at their hotel.

Choose it for the setting and the experience of staying on the peninsula, rather than as a base for repeated mainland trips.

The trade-off: A boat is part of the journey. Your arrival time, luggage and onward flight need more planning.

Ao Nang and Railay, side by side

Arriving

Ao Nang
Reach your hotel by road from Krabi Airport. Confirm the hotel entrance and transfer arrangements.
Railay
Plan a road-and-boat transfer or another confirmed boat connection. Ask the hotel which mainland pier and Railay landing it uses.

Beach setting

Ao Nang
A developed mainland beach area with shops, restaurants and traffic nearby.
Railay
Separate shorelines around a cliff-backed peninsula. Railay West and East are not interchangeable beach locations.

Eating out

Ao Nang
Our choice for a wider range of independent evenings and places to eat.
Railay
Restaurants and bars are available on the peninsula, but a mainland dinner adds a return-boat decision.

Mainland day trips

Ao Nang
Simpler for trips that start with a road pickup, without a boat leg before reaching the mainland.
Railay
Check where a tour starts. Do not assume an Ao Nang pickup includes getting you off Railay.

Children and mobility

Ao Nang
Road access can simplify luggage, pushchairs and arrivals. Still check steps and the walk to the beach.
Railay
Ask how boarding, luggage assistance and the route to your room work. A boat transfer is not automatically step-free.

Early flights

Ao Nang
Our safer planning choice when you want to avoid depending on a boat before the airport journey.
Railay
Confirm the boat and onward car before booking an early departure. Do not rely on an assumed first sailing.

Hotels to compare once you have chosen your base

These are different kinds of stay, not a like-for-like price ranking. Compare the room and booking conditions before deciding.

Ao Nang

Ban Sainai Resort

A cottage-style retreat in green surroundings for travellers who prefer a quieter hotel setting while staying on the mainland.

It is inland, not beachfront. The resort states that alcohol and pork are not sold or served; check that its dry-hotel policy suits your stay.

Ao Nang

DEEVANA PLAZA Krabi Aonang

A full-service hotel option in Ao Nang, with family rooms and pool-access room choices listed on its official site.

Do not confuse it with Deevana Krabi Resort, a separate property. Confirm the room type and the route to the beach.

Railay

Rayavadee Hotel

A pavilion-and-villa resort on the Railay peninsula for travellers making the hotel and surrounding beaches a main part of the holiday.

Contact the resort about your arrival and departure. Its own transfer arrangements should not be confused with a public longtail departure from Ao Nang.

Railay

Railay Bay Resort & Spa

A resort on the Railay peninsula to compare alongside Rayavadee when staying in Railay matters more than keeping road access.

The hotel offers an airport transfer at an additional charge. Confirm the landing point, room location and what the quoted transfer includes.

The main difference is how you get there

Ao Nang is connected to Krabi's road network. Railay is a peninsula separated from that network by limestone cliffs, so the final arrival is by boat. A short distance on a map does not make the two equally convenient for every trip.

For Railay, ask your hotel to confirm the mainland departure pier, arrival side, luggage arrangements and what happens if your flight is delayed. Rayavadee, for example, asks guests to contact the resort directly with their arrival and departure details. Do not assume every hotel uses the same transfer.

Railay East, Railay West and Phra Nang are different places

Railay West is the sandy, west-facing beach most people picture when choosing Railay. Railay East is a different shoreline and arrival area, while Phra Nang is another beach on the peninsula. The official Thai tourism directory distinguishes the east and west beaches rather than presenting Railay as one uniform waterfront.

Before booking a sea-view or beachfront room, check which shoreline it faces and how you reach the beach you want. A hotel on the peninsula can be a good choice without having every room beside Railay West. Ask about the path from your actual room, especially if steps, luggage or walking distance are concerns.

Where should you stay for day trips and evenings out?

Our default is Ao Nang if you want to mix beach days with mainland excursions and decide where to eat as you go. You can visit Railay without committing your whole stay to boat access. Check the departure point and return arrangements for the excursion you choose.

Stay in Railay when being there after your outings is part of the appeal. There are places to eat and drink on the peninsula; it is not a place where every meal must be at the hotel. But if you plan regular evenings in Ao Nang, confirm a suitable return boat rather than treating the journey like a taxi ride.

What about late arrivals, early flights and rough weather?

Choose Ao Nang for the night before an early flight if you want to remove the boat leg from your departure plan. You still need to allow time for the road transfer and airport check-in. For a late arrival into Krabi, only book a Railay transfer once the hotel or operator has confirmed it for your itinerary.

Avoid building the plan around an unconfirmed last boat, a fixed journey time or a fare from an old blog post. Weather can affect sea travel. Follow the operator's advice, and ask about a delayed arrival or missed connection before paying for a tight transfer.

Which is better for couples and families?

For couples, we would choose Railay when the setting and hotel time are the point of the trip, or Ao Nang when independent meals and a varied itinerary matter more. Quietness depends on the property and room, not simply on choosing a boat-access destination.

For families, compare the transfer as carefully as the pool or room. Ask about lifejackets, help with luggage, the landing and the path to the hotel. Neither area's beach should be treated as safe to swim in regardless of conditions: follow lifeguard instructions and do not enter the sea when red flags are flying.

Should you split your stay?

A split can make sense if you want mainland outings from Ao Nang followed by time on Railay. It is not automatically better: changing hotels adds packing, another transfer and a check-in gap. On a short holiday, choose the base that fits most of your plans rather than moving just to tick off both.

If the wider Krabi coast also appeals, compare Klong Muang, Tubkaak and Krabi Town in our full neighbourhood guide before committing to either area.

Common questions

Is Railay an island?

No. Railay is a peninsula on the Krabi mainland, but cliffs cut it off from the road network. Visitors arrive by boat rather than driving directly to a hotel there.

Can you walk from Ao Nang to Railay?

Do not plan a normal walk or road transfer between Ao Nang and Railay. The usual visitor connection is by boat. Confirm the departure and return arrangements for your hotel or excursion.

Is Ao Nang or Railay better for a first visit?

Our default is Ao Nang for flexible outings, meals out and road access. Choose Railay when its beach-and-cliff setting is a priority and you are comfortable planning boat transfers.

Can you visit Railay while staying in Ao Nang?

Yes. A visit by boat lets you see Railay without changing hotels. Confirm your return arrangements and allow for weather rather than assuming boats operate to a fixed late-night timetable.

Which is easier before an early flight from Krabi?

Ao Nang removes the boat leg from the airport journey. If you stay on Railay, confirm a suitable boat and onward road transfer before committing to an early flight.
